A Professional Plumber’s Guide to a Problematic Drain

Visit any hardware store across the country and you’ll see plenty of chemical drain cleaners and other similar products on the shelf that make it seem as if drain cleaning is a simple DIY (do-it-yourself) job. While it’s true that minor clogs can be cleared simply by using a plunger, often home drainage issues indicate a larger problem that may need a professional plumber’s attention.

If you notice the following 5 warning signs with a drain or drains in your home, you need to contact a professional plumber right away for drain repair services.

Slow Drains

As a homeowner, you should never underestimate the seriousness of drainage problems. A clogged or slow-moving drain might seem like a small problem, but it can quickly escalate into a much bigger issue Slow drains can indicate a variety of problems, including the early stages of a clog, pipes that have been narrowed due to mineral or grease buildup, or even improper grading of your drainage system. By calling a drain cleaning professional as soon as you notice slow drains, you can pinpoint the source of the problem and correct it before it escalates into bigger problems, including damaged or broken pipes.

Recurring Clogs

Bathtub and shower drains as well as bathroom sink drains are especially prone to stubborn clogs because of all the hair that gets washed down them. If you find yourself having to clean the hair out of your drain frequently, chances are you’re not succeeding in removing the entire clog each time. In any case where a clog returns after you’ve attempted to clear it yourself, you need to hire an expert drain cleaning company that can use professional tools to eliminate clogs deep in the pipe and solve the problem for good.

Multiple Clogged Drains

If more than one sink, toilet, or tub at a time becomes clogged in your home, you probably have a clog somewhere in your main drain system rather than in the drains of the individual fixtures. You won’t be able to reach this clog yourself using plungers or chemical drain cleaners. Instead, a professional drain cleaning will be required to reach deep into your system and eliminate the clog.

Foul Odor

Persistent sewer odors emanating from a drain or drains in your home can be a sign of a major drainage issue, you definitely need to have it checked out by a professional. It is quite possible that pollutants have built up in your drain, causing that foul odor to seep into the home. When you call a professional plumber, you can get an expert assessment of the actual problem. Sometimes the odor can be eliminated through a thorough drain cleaning, and in other cases you may need to replace broken sewer pipes in order to restore proper drainage to permanently eliminate the issue.

Water Flooding

One of the worst problems associated with clog drains is a sewage backup. If you notice evidence of water flooring in your basement and/or near a floor drain, this could indicate a clog and it may just be a matter of time before the drain stops working completely and you end up with contaminated water all over your floor. Getting professional drain cleaning the moment you notice standing water can help prevent the situation from progressing to the point where you’ll need an expensive cleanup.

As you can see, drain repair services are vital when you have an issue with your drainage system. By ignoring the warning signs described and not calling a professional to check your drainage system can lead to serious consequences in the future.

I have been trying to decide if I need to clean my drains with cleaner. So I decided to research to see when should you clean them out and what are the signs that it needs to be done. This article was super helpful and the one that stood out to me was slow draining. Ours definitely does that so I think I need to buy some drain cleaner.

For avoiding these types of issue, it’s better to clean our houses by professionals once in 6 months or 1 year. They will have all the equipments to clean the house thoroughly and we don’t have to face these types of problems always.

The problem in my apartment is reoccurring clogs. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times we clean out the bathroom sink– it’s always slow. It helps for a while, but then we’re right back to where we started. Maybe it’s time to talk to a professional. I would hate to create a bigger problem by avoiding this one.

Thank you for these warning signs. I never realized that multiple clogged drains could mean a clog in the main line. Is this common in apartment buildings or is it something that generally only happens in homes? Thanks for sharing these tips with us.

Thank you so much for sharing what some common drain problems are. Recently, my sink has been draining slowly. I was hoping that it would just go away after a few days, but it has continued to drain slowly. I would really like to get this fixed, especially since it sounds like it could lead to damaged pipes. This is definitely something I would like to avoid, so I would like to get it taken care of. Thanks for the great post, it was very helpful!

I probably need to have someone come look at my sink. The drain is definitely due for a good cleaning. I’ve been struggling with the reoccurring clogs this post talked about. It is becoming a problem.

Thank you for addressing the issue of multiple drain clogs. I think when people have a large home with more than one clog, they often think that it is just a coincidence. It is possible that it is. However, it is also a distinct possibility that, as you said, there is a clog in the main drain system. If there is more than one clog in a home, it is probably better to be safe than sorry and have a professional take a look.

From reading your list, it sounds like I need to talk to a professional. My bathroom sink is constantly clogged or running slowly. Even when I take the time to clear it out, it clogs back up within a few days. I hope it’s not too serious a problem.

I’ve actually got a pretty bad smell coming from my kitchen drain. I knew it was bad, but I had no idea that it could be an indicator of a major drainage issue. It sounds like I’m going to have to get someone over to check it out really soon. Hopefully it’s not actually a major issue, and can be taken care of easily.

This is a great little article with some very practical tips and advice. Drain problems are something most people would never even think about until living on their own, but you learn really fast how big a deal they can be. I think the most relevant thing you mention here is to not put off having an issue looked at. Even if it seems like a small problem, like a slow draining sink, it is better to have it looked at and taken care of as soon as possible. The longer a problem persists, the more the repair will likely cost.

The odor is always a kicker for me. If there is a recurring odor I will get something done about it even if there had been other signs. I’ll temporarily fix a slow drain or repeated drains but if it smells I get it fixed. Thanks for the other warning signs.

Thank you very much for this advice. I agree that you should never underestimate the seriousness of drainage problems. Years ago, I was having problems with slow drains. I should’ve done something about them sooner, but I didn’t and it turned into a very big problem. Eventually, I needed to hire a drain cleaning professional to help me out.

Thanks a lot for sharing such news. I agree that drain services should be given priority. Slow drains services can cause a big problem. So, overcome the slow drain is wise decision rather than facing a big problem.
