Horizon Kicks Off Annual Community Food Drive

Local Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Company Seeks Your Help in Feeding Community’s Hungry and Homeless

(DECEMBER 3, 2008; WILMINGTON, DE) — As the nation’s economic downturn continues, many throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland are cutting back on their holiday spending. Unfortunately, they are also cutting back on their charitable giving. And nobody is feeling the pinch of the sagging economy more than those organizations who help the poor and people in need of food assistance.

Food banks, shelters, agencies and churches throughout the region report a significant decrease in donations and funding in recent months as businesses, individuals and philanthropic organizations tighten their belts. Several emergency kitchens and food distribution centers have even had to close their doors and suspend their operations. Meanwhile, demand for food assistance has reached record levels.

This holiday season, one area company is doing its part to reverse this trend. Horizon Services Inc., a plumbing, heating and air conditioning services company based in Wilmington, DE, is joining up with Delaware Does More, The United Way of Delaware and The Food Bank of Delaware to collect food and non-perishable items for needy families in Wilmington and New Castle County, DE.

Now and throughout 2009, Horizon will be accepting donations of canned/packaged goods and other non-perishables at its Wilmington headquarters. As well, Horizon plumbing, heating and air conditioning technicians will be picking up donations from customers and other donors as they make their daily service calls throughout the region.

“Nobody wants to see families and neighbors go hungry…especially during the holidays and the winter months,” said Mark Aitken, co-owner of Horizon Services. “Helping those in need is the real reason for the season. We believe it’s our responsibility and our honor, as people who work and live in this community, to reach out to those among us who really need a helping hand.”

“Our trucks go out to hundreds of homes and businesses every day throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland,” said Dave Geiger, co-owner of Horizon. “We’re asking all of our customers and everyone throughout our service area to donate what they can. Every little bit helps, and if we all contribute something — even a few items — it will really add up. If we can all do that, there’s no reason anyone in our community should have to go hungry this winter.”

Horizon is urging individuals, families, businesses and community groups throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland to help with this food drive.
