Local Company to Donate New Furnaces to Needy Families
Whether you prefer to keep the room a little cooler or a little warmer at night, cold winter temperatures don’t pose much of a problem for most people. Indeed, trying to agree with your family on the perfect temperature may be the biggest challenge most of us face.
But for some local families, the simple act of turning up the heat in order to stay warm isn’t a viable option.
That’s why the employees of the local plumbing, heating, and cooling company, Horizon Services, have created a not-for-profit organization called Warm the Heart. Their mission is to provide free replacement furnaces or heating systems for needy families, as well as free or discounted heating repair services.
Warm The Heart has been operating since 2005, when they first donated 2 new furnaces to families in Delaware. Since then, they’ve given away 98 furnaces throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland.
Those who have received free furnaces include victims of accidents and/or diseases, mentally challenged individuals, families of disabled veterans, and unemployed or displaced workers. In some cases their old equipment has completely broken down, and in others it’s so old and inefficient that their energy bills are sky-high.
This winter, Warm The Heart will surpass 100 total heaters installed (since inception) by donating 10 new units to needy families in the area. The donation mirrors the growth in Horizon Services, which now employs over 700 people.
Horizon’s co-founder and senior vice president, Mark Aitken, says that Warm The Heart exists because it’s the right thing to do: “We feel that morally and professionally, we’re obligated to give back to the community. We’re a heating company, so what better way to give back than to provide free and low-cost heating services?”
This year, thanks to Warm the Heart, 10 area families will be able to turn the thermostat up at night or down, whichever is most comfortable for them.
